It seems that I will go to a little Halloween party, after all :) I thought it would be nice to bring something for the table: place cards! Easy to do and a pretty addition to any tablescape. To kill two birds with one stone, I will make these place cards edible, so that when you are finished admiring them you can also eat them (for desert, if you are well-mannered, or before the main course, if you are still a child at heart).
We've all seen wonderful pear place cards celebrating Fall, but mine have got a little extra-special. I designed a little spider web, to make them spooky for the Halloween table. If you want a quick fix, you can take the pear and draw the spider web with a sharpie. If you want them to be completely edible for the enjoyment of your guests, you can use food colorant. If you are willing to go the extra mile and make them taste delicious, use .... black cherry jam, like I did!
Edible place cards for Halloween tutorial:
1. Choose your pears and your jam. I used my mom's black cherry jam - thanks, ma! Wash the fruit.
2. Using a small tip brush, trace the jam on the pear. Make a center point and some beams.
3. Trace convex lines to connect the beams and make the spider web. Be careful not to touch the jam!
4. Make the name tags using toothpicks and washi tape. Let everything dry overnight, or you will end up with a messy table and all your guests licking their fingers before you even get started with the food :)
Enjoy!
Hooray! The pear place cards have been featured at Serendipity And Spice, Petite Hermine, A Diamond In The Stuff, JAQS Studio, Katie's Nesting Spot, From My Front Porch To Yours, My Repurposed Life and A Glimpse Inside. Thank you, Melissa, Jen, Courtney, Q, Katie, Pamela, Gail and Allison, your feedback means the world to me!

DeleteWow! I've seen bananas with messages scratched in the peel with a toothpick, but this is fantastic for a beautiful table! The webs look amazing!! But really, you could use pears for any holiday and put all kinds of things on them. Great idea : ) Saw you on a linky and came to say hello!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen any scraped bananas, just some simple pears used as place cards. I guess I fell in love with the beautiful shape of the pears and you are right - this could go for any other occasion (provided you also get the pears, which are seasonal in my country).
DeleteOh, I love everything about this! jelly to draw on food?!? I would have just done the same old chocolate piping but this is so much more interesting! Fab job!
